Upgrading devices with new Smart Functionalities
Older electronic devices that still serve their original purpose perfectly well are often retired because of a single missing feature. As we become more dependent on collecting and processing data, we are gradually eliminating devices that are not capable of this. However, if we could use software to upgrade these devices and enable them to keep pace with progress, as well as integrate them with data visualization and omnipresent artificial intelligence, we could continue to use them.
This year, we’ll tackle this issue at EDIT summer school by working on legacy slot machines that are still used by numerous casinos. We will search for a solution that can be utilized on other electronic devices as well.
During EDIT, we will design and implement a slot machine upgrade that makes regular slot machines smart. You will learn about the fundamentals of slot machines, data visualization, and software interface design. As we work, we will rely on our critical thinking skills and a number of technologies: REST/Websocket, user application technology, and data visualization.
